The mission of the MOJAS component is to provide substantive and advisory support to Afghanistan’s Ministry of Justice. The MOJAS staff, in addition to providing ongoing advice and information to the State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs regarding issues related to the MOJ, is tasked with one major program activity: advising and supporting the MOJ, with the focus being on five critical needs within the MOJ:
- Providing coordination and secretariat capacity to the MOJ’s Taqnin Department as it leads the Rule of Law Technical Working Group
- Improving coordination with other organizations, particularly in the justice sector, to help the MOJ develop clear and detailed policy plans, and to monitor implementation of those plans
- Improving coordination and internal communication with the MOJ to facilitate the MOJ’s decision-making
- Updating work procedures and training for key departments within the MOJ
- Helping the MOJ explain its role and activities to the public and other interested groups
