The mission of the AJIS component is to work towards the broad goals of improving Afghan citizens’ access to justice services and of ensuring that all of JSSP’s efforts are integrated in, and compatible with, the Afghan justice sector. The AJIS staff works to implement a range of key projects, including expansion of justice services to provincial areas outside of Kabul and serving as a resource for other JSSP sections, including JSSP’s regional teams. Staff activities focus on five major program components:
- Increasing the capacity, quality, and visibility of defense counsel (including legal aid providers) available to assist detainees and persons accused of crime
- Providing legal education and training designed to build the Afghan legal community’s capacity to provide legal training to its own members
- Supporting creation of an institutional, nationwide criminal defense system for indigent persons
- Building the capacity of Afghanistan’s justice sector at the provincial level outside of Kabul
- Assessing existing criminal justice information management systems, designing improved procedures for case tracking and data collection in the Attorney Generals Office, and helping to implement such procedures in coordination with other justice institutions
